Metrogel is a prescription-only topical gel containing metronidazole, an antibiotic specifically designed to treat rosacea. This clear gel helps alleviate the redness, inflammation, and spots caused by this chronic skin condition. Metrogel is available in 40g tubes and can only be obtained with a prescription.

Metrogel is primarily used to manage rosacea symptoms, including:

• Redness and swelling

• Acne-like breakouts (spots and pimples)

• Small, visible blood vessels

• Burning or stinging sensations

• Dry, irritated skin

For best results, follow your doctor’s advice and use Metrogel consistently for the prescribed duration, typically up to nine weeks.

If you forget to apply Metrogel but remember within 12 hours, apply it as soon as possible. If more than 12 hours have passed, skip the missed application and continue with your usual schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed application.

While Metrogel is generally well-tolerated, some users may experience mild side effects such as dry or irritated skin, redness, itching, or a stinging sensation. In rare cases, symptoms of rosacea may temporarily worsen. If side effects persist or become severe, discontinue use and consult a doctor.

Although the likelihood of a reaction between Metrogel and alcohol is low because it is applied topically, it is advisable to avoid alcohol during treatment. Alcohol can exacerbate rosacea symptoms and may interfere with the effectiveness of the treatment.

Metrogel is unlikely to interact with other medicines due to its topical application. However, in rare cases, it may slightly enhance the effects of blood-thinning medications like warfarin. If you are taking any anticoagulants, consult your doctor before starting Metrogel.

Store Metrogel in its original packaging at a temperature between 15°C and 25°C. Avoid refrigeration or freezing. Keep the gel out of the reach of children and do not use it after the expiry date stated on the packaging.
